Classification
Class | Application Type (Japanese Name) |
Period of Use |
Application |
Descritptions |
---|---|---|---|---|
General (NOT from IMS, NIBB, NIPS, ExCELLS) |
Category (A) (施設利用 (A)) |
FY (fiscal year) |
Any | CPU points = 80,000. |
Category (B) (施設利用 (B)) |
FY | sometime around Dec. |
CPU points > 80,000; upper limit of CPU points is 36,000,000. | |
Second Half of FY | sometime around June |
CPU points > 80,000; upper limit of CPU points is 18,000,000. Migration from Category (A) to this is also possible. See below for the details about migration. |

Internal (IMS, NIBB, NIPS, ExCELLS) |
Category (I) (所内利用) |
FY | Any | Only for applicants from IMS (Institute for Molecular Science), NIBB (National Institute for Basic Biology), NIPS (National Institute for Physiological Sciences), ExCELLS (Exploratory Research Center on Life and Living Systems) |
Others | Library Development (ライブラリ開発) |
FY | Any | This is a special category for development/porting of general-purpose program/database for molecular science, basic biology, or physiological sciences. CPU points can be assigned aside from those of the Categories (A), (B), and (I). Travel expenses can also be covered by RCCS if necessary. Also, RCCS can give a reward to the engaged persons (only for master-course or higher students). The final product of the project is required to be provided to RCCS. |
Migration from Category (A) to Category (B) Second Half of FY
Category (B) Second Half application is also available for Category (A) users in that FY.However, there are some restrictions/requirements on migration from Category (A) to Category (B).
- Project title of the Category (B) application must be the same as the title of Category (A) application.
- Reason of the migration to Category (B) should be described in research objectives and goals section of the application form.
- CPU points after the migration is: (Category (A) points) + (Category (B) points).
Notes
Huge computational resources (CPUs, GPUs, Disks) in RCCS are shared among academic researchers to promote large research projects.
Therefore, we impose following rules to keep fairness on CPU points assignments and to reduce administrative works.
- RCCS supercomputer resources will be assigned to per-group manner.
- A group consists of a representative and other members.
- Project title cannot be changed later.
- Project name should be very specific, but too much specific project name should be avoided.
- Multiple applications are not allowed.
- For "General" class application, only single application is allowed for single research group.
- Cannot belong to multiple groups.
- Single researcher must not be a group members of multiple groups (excluding "Others" class application).
- Duplicated projects not allowed.
- Duplicated projects are not allowed in any case even when the project classifications are different. The similarity between projects will be judged by inter-university committee. If a researcher is a member of multiple project groups, relationship/dependency of those projects must be described in the application form.
